Action Research
I should call it, How I Coach. I will give an example. I am currently the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Industrial High School. A 2A high school between Houston and Corpus Christi. We had our first game last Friday. We are relatively young with three players that had varsity experience from last year. Our first game was very fast pace and we made a lot of mistakes. We did happen to come back from being 14 down to taking the lead by 2 with a minute left. We ended up losing by 2 on a last second shot. After the game, I broke down the film with many different angles.
1. Offensively
2. Defensivley
3. Personnal
4. Other
I watched the film and took notes on what we did wrong and right. What we should have done and what we shouldn't have done. In practice on Monday and before the game Tuesday, we talked about what we should have done and what we will do the next time.
Game time, same opponent Tuesday night, and it wasn't even close. We corrected most of our mistakes and won by 12 points. The game wasn't that close.
When reading about action research, my thoughts went to what I went through coaching from that Friday night game we lost, all the way to the Tuesday game we won. How working on fixing the problems through experiences that I had in the past, working with my assistant coaches and coming up with the plan to win together and having players that cared about the outcome is in a way Action Research.
I will try to use this approach in the classroom to see what positive results I can generate.
